Think dimly lit, quirky spots where the drinks are cheap, the atmosphere’s electric, and every corner has a story to tell.

Now, I’m not talking about your typical, polished watering holes. These places are the real deal – unpolished, with a touch of grunge, and oozing character. You might find yourself in a bar with walls plastered in band posters, or sipping a pint in a place that’s been serving locals for decades. The beauty of these dive bars lies in their authenticity; they’re spaces where all walks of life come together for a laid-back, unpretentious night out.

Each bar I visited had its unique charm. From jukeboxes blasting retro hits to the friendliest bartenders sharing tales of the neighbourhood, these dives are the heart and soul of London’s underground scene. And the best part? You don’t have to break the bank to have a good time.

☝️ How we rated the services below:
We have scoured the vibrant city of London to bring you our list of the best dive bars. These watering holes are known for their laid-back atmosphere, cheap drinks, and gritty charm. So grab your mates and get ready for a night out that is sure to be filled with character and good times. Here are the criteria we used when selecting these top dive bars:

  • Authenticity: We searched for dive bars that exude a genuine sense of history and character. From creaky floorboards to worn-out bar stools, these establishments are steeped in nostalgia.
  • Atmosphere: We sought out venues with an unpretentious ambience that encourages relaxation and carefree socializing. The dim lighting, vintage décor, and eclectic music selection contribute to an authentic dive bar vibe.
  • Drink Selection: A diverse range of concoctions was crucial in our assessment. Whether it’s perfectly mixed classic cocktails or a wide variety of craft beers on tap, these places know how to keep your taste buds happy without breaking the bank.
  • Price: Dive bars should offer affordable prices so everyone can enjoy a night out without worrying about their wallets. In this regard, we made sure that each venue delivers excellent value for money when it comes to both drinks and food options.
  • Friendly Staff: Attentive staff who can strike up conversations with patrons is one characteristic we took into account while reviewing each establishment. Warm smiles behind the bar create an inviting environment where regulars feel welcome and newcomers quickly become part of the family.
  • Late-Night Atmosphere: It wouldn’t be a proper dive bar without embracing late-night shenanigans! We focused on venues with liberal closing times – places where locals go after other establishments wind down for those looking to extend their evening exploits.
  • Live Music or Entertainment: Any place worth its salt as a dive bar offers some form of entertainment. Whether it’s live music showcasing local talent or jukeboxes packed with old-school hits, these venues excel at keeping patrons entertained throughout the night.
  • Hidden Gems: We uncovered dive bars that are off the beaten path, away from mainstream crowds. These lesser-known haunts captivate with their underground appeal, making them destinations for those seeking something different and truly memorable.

Great place for a night out, with live music in the venue downstairs (and other events such as comedy clubs), as well as DJ playing best hits that keeps the crowd going. During the week there’s a selection of greatest hits on the jukebox. Amazing bar…

Whilst I loved this place I must also led you know that the title Saloon bar is misleading. There is no man playing the pianie who stops when you walk in. There are no saloon girls dancing…

Big Red

⭐ Our Honest Opinion of Big Red:

Big Red, oh how I loved thee! Nestled along Holloway Road in London, this cool pub proved to be a hidden gem worth discovering. As soon as I stepped foot inside, the lively atmosphere and modern decor enveloped me in its charm. The awesome soundtrack playing in the background set the perfect mood for a fantastic night out.

What struck me most about Big Red was not only its accessibility from Holloway Road station but also its unbelievably cheap drinks! My wallet certainly thanked me as I sipped on my pint of beer that only cost £4.50 – an absolute steal in this city!

As if that wasn’t enough reason to visit, Big Red also hosts events with support bands like Mercy pop-ups, adding an extra touch of excitement and entertainment to the experience. And let’s not forget about their friendly staff who welcomed us with open arms and made us feel right at home.

Stepping into Big Red felt like entering an American-style bar straight out of a movie. With pool tables and foosball at the back and decent toilets (at least for men!), there was no shortage of fun activities to partake in while enjoying our time here.

My only hope is that they bring back their food menu soon because honestly, aside from that minor detail, Big Red checked all the boxes when it comes to my ideal bar experience.

⭐ A Personal Take on The Ship, Soho:

The Ship, Soho – a legendary pub that oozes history and rock ‘n’ roll vibes. Nestled on Wardour Street, this place is not to be missed if you’re into good music, great drinks, and an atmosphere that exudes warmth and camaraderie.

The Ship boasts an impressive selection of beers, ciders, and wine at reasonable prices. However, do note there is no food available here. But worry not! With its inviting atmosphere and friendly clientele always up for a good time, it won’t take long before you feel right at home.

So grab some friends or make new ones amidst guitars hanging from walls adorned with memorabilia because nights at The Ship are meant to be cherished forever. Waxy’s Little Sister

⭐ A Personal Take on Waxy’s Little Sister:

Waxy’s Little Sister, the name itself already caught my attention. Tucked away on Wardour Street, this little gem of a pub is not to be missed. As I stepped inside, I was immediately drawn in by its cosy and inviting atmosphere. The open fires added a touch of warmth, creating the perfect ambiance for an evening out with friends.

What sets Waxy’s Little Sister apart from other pubs is its unique feature – the beer lift! Although it wasn’t working during my visit, the anticipation of experiencing it on my next trip only adds to the excitement. It’s these quirky touches that make this place truly special.

The service at Waxy’s Little Sister deserves a special mention. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive throughout our visit. I loved how we were able to order drinks from upstairs by simply writing on a piece of paper and sending it down with a pulley system – something you don’t see every day!

And let’s not forget about the drinks themselves – they certainly didn’t disappoint! With a good selection of draft beers, including their excellent Guinness pint, Waxy’s Little Sister proved to be heaven for beer lovers like myself.

Overall, if you’re looking for a charming Irish pub with great music and friendly staff located just outside Chinatown and near Leicester Square, then look no further than Waxy’s Little Sister. The Artful Dodger

⭐ Our Unvarnished Impressions of The Artful Dodger:

The Artful Dodger, oh what a hidden treasure this place is! Tucked away in the heart of London, it’s the best bar I’ve had the pleasure of stepping into during my entire trip. From the moment you walk through its doors, there’s an undeniable warmth and welcoming atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home.

This proper old school pub has all the classic elements that make it a truly authentic experience. Pool table? Check. Dart board? Check. Jukebox playing tunes from our glory days? Absolutely check! As if that wasn’t enough, they even had a TV tuned to MTV on mute, followed by an exciting Football League Cup match also on mute – pure genius! And who knows, maybe they would have turned up the volume if we’d asked.

But what really sets The Artful Dodger apart is its sense of community and genuine hospitality. The locals were friendly and more than happy to strike up conversations over pints of reasonably priced beer. Time was short for me on this occasion so I only managed a quick pint or two but mark my words, I will definitely be returning.

If you’re looking for an honest local experience with good company and great drinks, look no further than The Artful Dodger. Step inside this traditional gem and immerse yourself in true British pub culture – it’s an adventure worth having!
