Best Roast Dinners in London

The ultimate roast dinner in London! It’s a journey that takes you through the heart of British culinary tradition, wrapped in a Sunday ritual almost as old as time itself. I’ve been on this delicious mission myself, and let me tell you, it’s a delightful challenge.

Imagine tucking into a plate heaped with tender, succulent meat, surrounded by golden, crispy roast potatoes, all drenched in a rich, hearty gravy. And let’s not forget the crowning glory – a puffy Yorkshire pudding, as essential to the roast as Big Ben is to London’s skyline.

Each pub and restaurant I’ve ventured into has its unique take on this classic dish. From the homely, rustic pubs where the roast feels like a warm hug from your grandma to the chic restaurants that add a gourmet twist to every element on the plate. It’s a celebration of flavours and traditions, where every bite tells a story of culinary craftsmanship.

I’ve laughed, I’ve dined, and I’ve savoured every mouthful. And now, I’m here to take you on this taste adventure. Are you ready to explore the diverse and delicious world of London’s roast dinners with me? Let’s embark on this flavour-packed journey together!

🔑 Key Takeaways:
Here’s what you’ll learn from reading this article:

  • London is a foodie’s paradise, with an impressive variety of restaurants serving traditional British cuisine, including some of the best roast dinners in town.
  • Sunday lunch has always been something of a sacred ritual for Brits, and there are plenty of places in London to indulge in this gastronomic tradition.
  • The quality of meat used for the roasts can make or break the experience; hence, it’s essential to choose your restaurant wisely and opt for one that sources its meats from trusted local suppliers.
  • Many restaurants put their own twist on traditional roasts by incorporating seasonal ingredients and innovative cooking techniques to create unique flavour profiles.
  • While ambience and service are crucial factors to consider when choosing a place to enjoy your roast dinner, ultimately it’s the quality of food that should be the deciding factor while exploring various foodie destinations in London.

☝️ How we rated the services below:
As self-proclaimed foodies, we have set out to find the best roast dinners in London. We understand that everyone’s taste buds may differ and thus, we have come up with criteria that appeal to a general audience.

  • Choice of meat: We looked for restaurants that offer a variety of meats such as beef, lamb, chicken or pork. The meat should be cooked to perfection and not dry.
  • Accompaniments: Good accompaniments make all the difference. We searched for places that provide quality roasted vegetables and crispy Yorkshire puddings.
  • Gravy: Arguably the most important part of any roast dinner is the gravy! It has to be rich in flavour but not too salty or watery. We also looked at whether it is homemade or from a jar.
  • Portion sizes: Nobody wants to walk away from a Sunday Roast still feeling hungry! That’s why we considered portion sizes when visiting each restaurant.
  • Presentation/Presentation aesthetics: As much as taste matters looks matter too (we eat with our eyes first). So yes presentation plays an important role if well presented there are more chances of us being satisfied before even tasting

The Culpeper

⭐ Our Unvarnished Impressions of The Culpeper:

The Culpeper – A must-visit spot in London! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made me feel right at home. The place features lovely decor that blends perfectly with the vibrant mood of Petticoat Lane while the range of draught beer is simply amazing.

I had an incredible experience here thanks to Sean – he’s one of the best! His passion for his work really shone through as he expertly managed everything from my order to watching over my belongings. It’s fantastic knowing there are still people around who truly care about creating safe spaces for their customers!

Although the Sunday roast wasn’t entirely to my taste, it was still worth trying out. While some aspects could have been more flavourful (hello gravy!), portions were generous, and presentation was on point. Despite waiting a bit long between courses, every member of staff remained friendly and courteous towards me throughout – nothing beats good service, does it?

Overall, I would highly recommend this charming establishment in East London if you’re searching for beautiful surroundings and attentive service alongside your refreshment or meal in Regent’s canal area especially if you’re keen on sampling various types of ale!. Canton Arms

⭐ Our Genuine Review of Canton Arms:

Canton Arms, where have you been all my life? This little pub on S Lambeth Road in London is now my favourite spot for hearty meals and good beers. I recently visited with some friends to try their famous Braised ‘ale and onion’ Dexter short rib, mash (for two) dish that everyone’s raving about. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The meat was tender, full of flavour and had a real home-cooked vibe to it.

Although they don’t offer traditional roasts on Sundays, there are plenty of other delicious sounding dishes to choose from. I highly recommend the beef rib and mash which is perfectly designed for sharing among two people but if you’re feeling extra hungry don’t hesitate to order a side dish as well. The portions may not be huge but the flavours make up for it!

Apart from the fantastic food options, what sets Canton Arms apart is its friendly staff who are always willing to help out with recommendations or dietary requests. Trust me when I say this place is worth a visit – whether it’s just for drinks or a full-blown meal experience.

Overall, Canton Arms has left an impression on me that will last forever! It’s more than just a regular pub; this place got soul! Great beer selection plus even better vibes equals one amazing time out with friends or loved ones. Do yourself a favour and visit this gem soon – your taste buds will thank you later!

The Cat & Mutton

⭐ A Personal Take on The Cat & Mutton:

The Cat & Mutton is a one-of-a-kind pub, situated in the heart of London’s vibrant Broadway Market. Upon entering this establishment, I was immediately struck by its unique atmosphere and style. The interior is tastefully designed with an authentic traditional British pub feel but infused with modern touches that popped out all over the place. It provided the perfect setting for my night out with friends.

As we settled into our seats to order drinks and food, we were entertained by a DJ set that had us grooving along to funky tunes while sipping cocktails specially crafted by their talented bartenders. The best part? The mouthwatering steak & ale pie which quickly became my favourite dish served at any bar or restaurant in recent memory.

Moreover, what made me decide on coming back again was exceptional service from Cat & Mutton’s friendly staff who attended to all our needs and even went as far as taking time to tell us more about some of the history behind their world-renowned selection of beer brands.

Hawksmoor Seven Dials

⭐ A Personal Take on Hawksmoor Seven Dials:

Hawksmoor Seven Dials – where do I even begin?! This restaurant blew me away! From the moment I walked in to the moment I left, everything was perfect. The atmosphere was amazing, so inviting and made me feel right at home. It’s definitely one of my new favourite spots for a good meal out.

The service here is top notch; they really go above and beyond to make sure everything is just right. Our waiter was incredibly friendly (shoutout to the Brazilian guy who lived in New Jersey and Florida!) and he knew his stuff when it came to steaks. He recommended we try the porterhouse with our Sunday roast instead of the T-bone, which turned out to be a great choice!

And speaking of food… oh my goodness. The meat was cooked to perfection – juicy, tender, full of flavour – just how it should be! And don’t even get me started on that salted caramel sundae dessert… it was absolutely divine! Even their homemade ketchup had some serious flavour going on.

Overall, Hawksmoor Seven Dials ticks all the boxes for an amazing dining experience: great decor, attentive staff who know their stuff when it comes to food and drinks, and delicious meals that are worth every penny. Marksman

⭐ A Personal Take on Marksman:

Marksman, oh how you hit the bullseye! From the moment we walked in, to the last sip of coffee, our experience was nothing short of phenomenal. The food is exquisite and deserves every bit of its reputation for being some of the best in London. Although a booking may be hard to come by, it’s worth planning ahead just to indulge in this culinary delight. Trust me; your taste buds will thank you.

The atmosphere at Marksman is warm and welcoming. We dined on Sunday lunch and enjoyed the cosy interiors with friendly service that made us feel right at home. A shoutout goes to our server Kat who left no stone unturned when providing us with an overview of their splendid menu choices.

Let’s talk about the food – it’s absolutely sublime! Every dish from starters through dessert was carefully prepared with such precision leaving my palate stimulated yet craving more. The beef sirloin with Yorkshire pudding was cooked perfectly and easily one of my top picks but Olga’s celeriac tart had flavours that were out-of-this-world delicious! Aside from excellent cuisine, what truly stood out is how well they treat their patrons; props go out to Olga for engaging us gracefully throughout dinner!

If you’re looking for a special place where traditional pub grub meets fine dining then look no further than Marksman Public House – where quality takes centre stage over quantity every time. I would wholeheartedly recommend paying them a visit as soon as possible!

The Crabtree

⭐ Our Genuine Review of The Crabtree:

The Crabtree in London is a hidden gem that boasts of an outstanding location just off the Thames walk. I was drawn to this place by its rave reviews and was not left disappointed. From the ambience to the excellent food, everything about this restaurant screams excellence. As someone who loves vegan options, I appreciated their variety on the menu that catered well to all kinds of dietary preferences.

When we arrived at The Crabtree, I must admit, my initial interaction with the staff wasn’t great as they seemed preoccupied chatting amongst themselves. However, a fourth person attended to us immediately upon returning and even seated us ten minutes before our booking time. Their customer service redeemed them from my earlier experience and made me feel like they value their patrons.

The drinks were spot-on; I particularly remember loving their GnT – it hit differently! Also worth mentioning is how fast the food arrived despite being a busy Saturday evening – kudos to their lightning-fast kitchen team.

All in all, if you’re looking for a great eating/drinking spot by the Thames with amazing atmosphere where one page each suffices for both drink and food menus – then The Crabtree should be your next stop!

👍 Our Reasons for Recommending:

Nice view by the river.. I tried the place twice. generally I would like to think it is much better when it is less crowded – so away from long weekends and bank holidays – as the food is much nicer when they are in less stress….

Blacklock Shoreditch

⭐ Our Honest Opinion of Blacklock Shoreditch:

If you’re looking for a steak that’ll leave an impression on you, look no further than Blacklock Shoreditch. Trust me when I say, this place is worth the hype and every penny. As someone who loves their meat cooked to perfection, I couldn’t ask for more from these guys.

One thing that stands out about Blacklock is their attention to detail – from sourcing the best meat in the country to using every single part of the cow in their dishes. Their sides were just as impressive as the main attractions too! My personal favorites included beef dripping fries (chips), 10 hour ash baked sweet potato, garlic bone marrow (you have to try it with your steak!), and broccoli walnut salad – all absolutely delicious!

The service was amazing; our server Frederica was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout our meal. She even recommended some great drinks for us! Between their great food, excellent drinks selection and lovely vibe – we ended up visiting twice during our trip 🙂

Overall if you’re looking for a memorable dining experience in London or are just craving some serious meat-lover goodness- then definitely check out Blacklock Shoreditch!

The Anchor & Hope

⭐ Our Genuine Review of The Anchor & Hope:

The Anchor & Hope, wow! What an experience! From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and appreciated. It’s definitely a restaurant disguised as a pub with its French bistro-style ambience that instantly transported me to Provence. The classic French food was remarkable–I had the fish which was so fresh and deliciously cooked to perfection. And how can I forget about the beef? Oh my goodness, it was full of flavor and left me wanting more.

What surprised me most was the sheer amount of butter used in their cooking – but let me tell you, it worked wonderfully for both taste buds and health (when one is not consumed on a daily basis) – even the potatoes were incredibly flavored!! Their service deserves a separate mention: no fuss at all; everything felt like clockwork. The waiters were efficient yet friendly enough to make everyone feel right at home.

Their desserts added just – if not- more charm than their main course dishes did . Whether I wanted simple or unusual ones, they had every kind of pudding imaginable!

In conclusion- anyone who wants quality dining must visit this incredible place regularly because for them too it will turn into some sort of ‘home away from home’.

👍 Our Reasons for Recommending:

  • French family restaurant feel with classic food
  • Superb desserts and knowledgeable service
  • Best dining along the Cut in bistro style
